Last month the Classics Department of Sofia University had one of its frequent guests - Dr. Gorana Stepanic from University of Pula, Croatia, hold a lecture on the Renaisance texts - "Editing a Renaissance Commentary Text - Problems, Solutions and Challenges."

08.12.2011 - the Students' day in Columbario




On the 08th of December we celebrated the Students' day in the Columbarium (the last floor of the Sofia University main building, where the Department of Classics is situated). Gaudeamus igitur!

The celebration of the Department of Classics


On the 02nd of December, 2011 in the Hall 1 of the Sofia University main building took place the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Department of Classics. In the morning during the official part their greetings addressed distinguished Bulgarian scientists as well as alumni of the Department – Prof. Vassilka Tapkova-Zaimova (MA in Classical philology from Sofia University in 1947), Prof. Zlatozara Gocheva, Prof. Maria Chichikova, Assoc. Prof. Petar Delev, Assoc. Prof. Kostadin Rabadzhiev, Prof. Stoyna Poromanska, Assoc. Prof. Dimka Gocheva. Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov, professor in Roman literature at the Department, gave a speech on behalf of the Rector of the University . There were greetings also by Prof. Tzvetan Teophanov, Dean of the Faculty and by Gergina Toncheva, founder of the National Gymnasium of Ancient Languages and Cultures.


In the afternoon there was a review on the activities of the Department in the past 90 years (you could see the exact programme in one of the last posts). During the break the guests had the possibility to taste dishes made according to ancient recipes, selected especially for the event. The celebration ended in the evening in the famous restaurant “Yaitseto”.

"Antigone" in the Dramatic Theatre of Stara Zagora






On 25.11.2011 in Stara Zagora the actors of the Dramatic Theatre presented “Antigone” by Sophocles (screenplay adapted by Maria Doneva, producer Ivelin Keranov). The play was on stage specially for the trip of students and lecturers from the Department of Classis in Sophia University “St. Clement of Ochrid” in connection with their project “Arion” on the ancient drama and its reception in Bulgaria. After the performance a discussion followed on “Antigone” and the ancient theatre between the actors, the producers and the spectators. Students from the National Gymnasium of Ancient Languages and Cultures – Sofia took part in the discussion – the performance was included in the program of their expedition “Augusta Traiana 2011”.
Earlier the same day the classicists visited the remains of the ancient city of Augusta Traiana and the new Regional Historical Museum. On 26.11. Assist.Prof. Dorothea Tabakova and Dimitar Dragnev and Polina Yordanova, students, were interviewed in radio station  “Stara Zagora” on the aim of their trip to Stara Zagora.
